Position Summary
To assess patient needs, plan, implement and evaluate the plan of patient care in the Ob/Gyn unit. Direct junior and auxiliary team members Provide safe quality ethical nursing care in accordance with the Hospital, international and federal standards and regulations. Provides leadership in the absence of the Unit Manager.
Summary of Main Duties
• Actively participates in upholding and promoting the vision and culture of University Hospital Sharjah (UHS).
• Complies with all UHS policies, procedures and fire regulations.
• Participates in all aspects of the International Accreditation program to assist UHS to attain and maintain international accreditation standards.
• Performs nursing practice in line with the facility, MOH, JCI and FDON policies, procedures and standards.
• Takes charge of the Unit in the absence of the Unit Manager.
• Assumes team leader (Charge) responsibility for shift duty completing tasks as allocated.
• Adapts to changing work situations by adjusting staff assignment and/or seeking assistance from the Unit Manager ensuring patient safety is maintained and scope of practice and hospital policies are not violated.
• Ensures nurse: patient ratios are maintained whilst on duty, highlighting significant problems to Nurse Manager or Supervisor.
• Allocates specific tasks to other nursing staff as required.
• Provides mentorship to new staff throughout their orientation period.
• Participates in performance plans with individual staff members, meeting with staff, reviewing practice concerns, providing required education, documenting performance plan outcomes and recommendations as assigned by Unit manager.
• Participates in annual staff appraisals for Nursing Assistants and Staff nurses as assigned by Unit Manager.
• Reviews yearly competencies with junior staff as assigned by Unit Manager.
• Performs regular patient and unit rounds with Unit Manager or Supervisor to ensure quality patient care, reporting any deficiencies and taking appropriate action to resolve.
• Prepares and submits statistical data as requested by Unit Manager or Supervisor.
• Maintains relevant unit KPIs as requested by Unit Manager or Supervisor.
• Participates in recruitment and selection as assigned by Unit Manager.
• Investigates and evaluates Incident reports, taking necessary and appropriate action, including completion of documentation and reporting to appropriate personnel.
• Participates in the provision of a safe and positive workplace by enhancing occupational health and safety requirements, as well as monitoring the operations and continuous improvement of the safety management system.
• Attends assigned committees and reports back to department
Responsibilities
• Participates in the CNE programme, delivering education as requested to the nursing department as well as in – house education to the Ob/Gyn staff.
• Acts as clinical resource providing support for patient care and departmental operational concerns for all junior staff.
• Assess, plan, implements and evaluates the nursing care of each patient, considering the patient’s individuality, abilities, culture and right to choose. Utilizing hospital approved assessments, including pain scales and fall risk scales.
• Prioritizes patient’s individual needs and delegates aspects of nursing care to other nursing team members within his/her scope of professional practice.
• Performs nursing care in response to the patient’s needs, treatment plan and nursing care plan, supported by nursing knowledge and current best practice.
• Performs competency-based procedures, including but not exclusive to IV cannulation, venipuncture, urinary Catherization, enteral feeding, O2 therapy, blood sugar monitoring, wound care and blood transfusions.
• Performs as ordered CTG monitoring of Ante Natal mothers.
• Carries out as required Infant bathing, educating new parents in the safe practice of Infant bathing.
• Assists physicians with examinations, procedures and other processes related to direct patient care
• Documents the nursing care of each patient from admission to discharge in accordance to facility medical record and documentation policy
• Assists and provides documented patient and family health education, based upon the individual nursing care plan of the patient
• Ensures patient environment is safe for patients and staff by utilizing infection control practices, adhering to International patient safety goals and following facility health and safety policies
• Collaborates with the Multi-disciplinary team and acts as patient advocate to ensure quality care is delivered
• Adhere to the safe administration of medication policy within the facility, administering prescribed medications, including narcotics as per scope of practice
• Monitors the condition of patient and reports any changes to appropriate personnel
Position Requirements/Qualifications
• Demonstrates sensitivity to patients’ comfort and privacy and expresses interest in their progress
• Utilizes and ensures maintenance of equipment and instruments, reporting any damages, equipment malfunctioning to the Bio – Medical department and nurse in charge immediately
• Participates in nursing continuous quality improvement initiatives, in service education programmes, unit meetings and committee functions as assigned by Unit Manager
• Initiates emergency, safety practices and fire safety measures as necessary.
• Performs crash cart checking in accordance with hospital policy.
• Maintains unit stock/consumables, crash cart stock, in accordance with facility policy on medication expiry dates and safe location of consumable items
• Maintains and adheres to patient confidentiality at all times
• Responsible for attendance to yearly mandatory training as scheduled on mandatory training calendar
• Responsible for professional clinical practice and is actively involved in updating knowledge through educational activities
• Performs other job-related duties as assigned (within scope of practice)

Requirements/Qualifications
Required
• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing holding a BSc Nursing /Diploma of Nursing, not less than 3 years study duration
• Minimum 5 years post-graduation experience with at least 2 years in current specialty (Ob/Gyn)
• BLS certificate
Desirable
• NRP certificate
Licenses/Registration
Required
• Current license in country of origin
• UAE Ministry of Health License
Within three months of employment
• NRP certificate
