Position Summary
The EMG/NCS Technologist performs a variety of diagnostic studies to evaluate neuromuscular disorders. The technologist works closely with physicians and patients to assess and document nerve and muscle function. Technologists operate electrodiagnostic equipment, collect data, ensure patient comfort, and prepare results for physician interpretation. Additional responsibilities include conducting electroencephalography (EEG) and evoked potentials such as visual evoked potentials (VEP) to support comprehensive neurodiagnostic evaluations.The EMG/NCS Technologist performs a variety of diagnostic studies to evaluate neuromuscular disorders. Summary of Main Duties
- Responsible for performing advanced neurodiagnostic procedures including nerve conduction studies (NCS), electromyography (EMG), electroencephalography (EEG), and visual evoked potentials (VEP), under the supervision or guidance of a consultant neurologist.
- Prepares patients for testing, explains procedures, and ensures optimal comfort and cooperation.
- Accurately places electrodes (surface or needle) according to international standards (e.g., 10-20 system for EEG).
- Performs studies including motor and sensory nerve conduction, repetitive nerve stimulation, F-waves, H-reflexes, and needle EMG.
- Conducts EEGs for diagnostic and monitoring purposes in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
- Performs evoked potentials such as VEP, and ensures signal quality and reproducibility.
- Operates and maintains all neurophysiologic equipment, ensuring proper calibration, functionality, and troubleshooting as required.
Responsibilities
- Reviews signal acquisition during testing and adjusts parameters to reduce artifacts and ensure diagnostic quality.
- Provides technical assistance during physician-conducted needle EMG studies and advanced EEG interpretations.
- Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide age-specific care and communicate effectively with paediatric, adult, and geriatric patients.
- Maintains accurate documentation of test results, procedural details, and patient records.
- Adheres to infection control policies and ensures safe handling of all equipment and consumables.
Position Requirements/Qualifications
- Graduate of Diploma/Bachelor degree in Clinical Neurophysiology Technology or Allied Health field with EMG/NCS and EEG training.
- At least 5 years of relevant hospital experience in performing EMG, NCS, EEG, and VEP studies
- Must have a valid SHA license or evaluation as an EMG/NCS Technologist or Clinical Neurophysiology Technologist.
- Certification in BLS required.
