Position Summary

The Sustainability Officer is responsible for implementing and monitoring sustainability initiatives within the hospital, including energy and water conservation, waste management, and sustainable procurement. The role involves collaborating with hospital teams to reduce environmental impact, ensure compliance with regulations, and promote a culture of sustainability while maintaining patient safety and quality care.

Summary of Main Duties

  • Develop and implement the hospital’s sustainability strategy in alignment with organizational goals and healthcare regulations.
  • Draft and update sustainability policies covering energy use, waste management, water conservation, and sustainable procurement.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental legislation, health standards, and accreditation requirements.
  • Monitor hospital energy consumption, water usage, and waste streams to identify opportunities for efficiency and reduction.
  • Lead initiatives to reduce medical and non-medical waste, including recycling, reprocessing, and responsible disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Benchmark hospital performance against industry standards and accreditation frameworks.
  • Build relationships with local authorities, NGOs, suppliers, and community organizations to advance sustainability goals.
  • Represent the hospital in sustainability forums, networks, and partnerships.

Responsibilities

  • Support the adoption of renewable energy sources and green building standards where feasible.
  • Collaborate with clinical, administrative, and facilities teams to integrate sustainable practices into daily operations.
  • Deliver staff training and awareness programs on environmental sustainability and responsible resource use.
  • Engage patients and visitors in sustainability initiatives (e.g., recycling campaigns, awareness signage).
  • Collect, analyse, and report sustainability performance metrics (e.g., carbon footprint, energy savings, waste reduction).
  • Prepare regular sustainability reports for hospital leadership and external stakeholders.

Position Requirements/Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Public Health, Facilities Management, or related field (Master’s degree preferred)
